Samuel Montross1
#7351, born about 1744, died 1810
Life Events
|
Birth* | about 1744; Roslyn Harbor, Queens, New York2 |
Marriage* | about 1769; Principal=Phebe Ann Veeder4,5 |
Census* | 1790; Philipstown, Dutchess, New York; with 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16,six females.6 |
Note* | 1796; "The old homestead of Samuel and Phebe Ann Montross was located where the house of Phebe Ann Mott now [Aug. 1911] stands in Clinton Hollow. The building just north on the same side of the street and once used as a shoemaker's shop is where the home of Hannah & Ed. W. Briggs was. It contained three rooms -- a living room, one bedroom downstairs and one upstairs.
"The old house of Benjamin Briggs and his wife Deborah Wickes who came from the east is where the house of H. Van Dyne now stands."7 |
Residence* | 1796; Clinton Hollow, Dutchess, New York; from Tarrytown, NY. He "bought the Zephie Carpenter place aand worked the old mills."8 |
Census | 1800; Clinton, Dutchess, New York; with 2 males 16-25; 1 male 45 and over; 3 females 10-15; 1 female 45 and over; total 7 in household.6 |
Death* | 18104,5 |
Note | as further evidence of this relationship, one of Samuel Montross’s known sons, Jacob b. abt. 1774, is found still in the Town of Clinton on the 1810 Census with a nearby neighbor of Benjamin Southard. This Benjamin is probably the son of Benjamin and brother to our Barend who married Elizabeth Ostrander. Their daughter Catherine married Samuel Montross Worden.
Moreover, on a single page in the 1810 Census in the Town of Clinton, I find not only this Jacob Montross and Benjamin Southard but also several Barnes and a Carman. Catherine Barnes was Benjamin Southard, Sr.’s mother, and Grace Carman was his great grandmother.9 |
Name-Oth | Matross; which was the spelling adopted by some members of the Montross family around the time of the Revolutionary War, "possibly in an attempt to dissociate themselves from the branch of the family whose members fought on the British side, that is, the sons of Peter (11)."10 |

Phebe Ann Veeder
#7352, born about 1744, died 1824
Life Events
|
Name Variation | Phebe Van Velzer2 |
Name Variation | Vedder3 |
Birth* | about 17444,5,6 |
Marriage* | about 1769; Principal=Samuel Montross7,8 |
Death* | 18247 |
Note* | The parents shown here are now confirmed by a DNA match to Vrooman. Phebe Ann's father may have been Cornelius Veeder because she named her first son Cornelius. The name Cornelius appears fairly frequently in Dutch and early New York records, including NY Wills 61, 1821 and 1993.See FamilySearch ID LZGQ-RZB. Another clue is that a Cornelius Veeder and several others with the Veeder surname died in Fonda, Montgomery County, where daughter Amy's inlaws settled after leaving the Town of Clinton in Dutchess County, NY.1 |

Jacob Montross1
#7357, born 1774
Life Events
|
Birth* | 1774; Philipstown, Dutchess, New York2 |
Note* | Clinton Hollow, Dutchess, New York; I am assuming here that this Jacob was actually the brother of Enos Montross, rather than his son as indicated in the family papers cited here as a source. Because of Census ages, Jacob had to have been at least 50 in 1830, 40 in 1820 and 30 in 1810.3 |
Jane Montross1
#7358, born 1788, died 1877
Life Events

Birth* | 17882 |
Marriage* | 14 July 1806; Dutch Reformed Church, Rhinebeck Flatts, Dutchess, New York; Principal=Pieter Knickerbocker3,2 |
Residence* | Clinton Hollow, Dutchess, New York4 |
Death* | 18775 |
Note* | Jane seems to have been misidentified by Taylor in the Montross Genealogy as a daughter of Jacob, instead of as a daughter of his son, Samuel. |
