Life Events
|
Birth* | about 1775; Hopkinton, Rhode Island |
Marriage* | 20 February 1794; Swansea, Massachusetts; Principal=Elisabeth Shearman2,3 |
Death* | before 26 January 1835; Hopkinton, Rhode Island |
Will* | 26 January 1835; mentions wife Elisabeth, sons Anthony, Loyd, and Allen Jr. and daughter Hannah.2 |
Note | According to a bio on Charles Caswell (Allen's grandson), either Allen Caswell or Justus Lockwood must have married a daughter of Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence. This is not correct. Allen Caswell's wife, Elizabeth Shearman, was a cousin to Roger Sherman. She was also a cousin to General William Sherman of Civil War fame. Allen Caswell's will is dated 28 Jan 1833 and was probated 26 Jan 1835. The will reads as follows: "In the name of God- Amen. I Allen Caswell of Hopkinton in the County of Washington and State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations yeoman, being sane ...." A copy of the will and the inventory taken after his death is in DJW files.4 |

Children | |
Life Events
|
Birth* | 1833 |
Marriage* | Principal=Lewis Snyder |
Death* | 31 January 19201 |
Note* | Her obituary was printed in an old Cuba Patriot newspaper: "After nearly eighty-seven years of life, beautifully and splendidly lived, Mrs. Juliette E. Snyder received the call from the great beyond on the night of Jan. 31, 1920 and was laid at rest at the little cemetery at Abbotts, beside her husband on Tuesday, Feb. 3rd. Rev. Frank O. Leonard, of Cuba, officiating. "During the past week, she contracted a cold, followed by pneumonia. This, with a general breaking down, gave way to the grim reaper, whose hand it was impossible to stay. "Juliette E. Caswell was born in the town of Ischua Feb. 23, 1833, in the house which still stands, on the old home farm of Abbotts, now owned by her brother, Charles J. She was a daughter of the late Anthony Caswell, one of the earliest pioneer settlers of this section and she was one of the oldest residents in the town of Lyndon. "She was married to Lewis Snyder, who passed away Nov. 30, 1886. To this union five children were born, Mrs. Ellen M. Ogden of Franklinville, John L. and Orville A., of Abbotts, Elizabeth Snyder Scott, of Lyndon and Tena Genette Snyder, who died in infancy. She also leaves one brother, Charles J. of Abbotts. "After her husband's death, Mrs. Snyder lived with her two sons on the home farm they had purchased and which she loved so much, except as she visited with her other children and grandchildren until her death. "The whole community extends its sympathy to her sons, whose faithfulness to her, since her husband's death, has been a rare example of filial devotion, she being blind nearly fifteen years of that time. "The deceased was an affectionate wife and the kindest of mothers. She found great comfort in doing for her children and others. She was patient in her suffering and self sacrifice was one of her traits of character. She loved peace and her home was a place where everyone received a hearty welcome. "The beautiful floral offerings, but finally showed the love and esteem in which Mrs. Snyder was held. One we loved so much is gone, The voice we loved to hear is still, The place made vacant in the home, Can never more be filled." |

Death* | 24 November 1893 |
Note* | According to the writings of Jessie Otto Lewis, Decimal Caswell was killed in the woods in 1893. Sally Squire Pettengill, town historian of Ischua, furnished the following account (no source): "Decimal Caswell (b. Aug. 11, 1847, d. Nov 24, 1893), son of Anthony and Sally Lockwood Caswell, grew up on the family farm, but eventually settled in Lyndon, NY. "There were a few comments which he made about life back then in one of the Cattaraugus County histories, which were interesting. He told of being out hunting at night and when darkness fell, they stopped where they were and spent the night. Many times, when morning came, they found that they had slept very near their home. He also remembered that many winters the straw in their mattresses had to be fed to the cows as there was none left in the barn. "He married Orlina Roat and had seven children: Archie, Medie, Merl, Darwin, Lora, Mary and John." |
