Grace Gertrude Caswell
#900, born 28 March 1863, died 1893
Life Events
|
Birth* | 28 March 1863; Ischua, Cattaraugus, New York1,2 |
Note | Grace is living with her uncle Charles Caswell and his wife Electa in 1870 and 1880. Her father is Calvin, Charles' brother. Calvin died in 1863. Charles was named Electa's guardian in papers issued in 1879. According to a bio on Charles, his great grandfather was Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Therefore, Grace should be Sherman's great great grandchild. That translates to one of Sherman's daughters marrying either Justus Lockwood or Allen Caswell, but I have found no evidence to support this. What I have found is that both Roger and General William Tecumseh Sherman are related, as follows: They are 4th cousins, 3 times removed, both descending from Henry and Sarah Rene Lawrence Shearman, who are also Grace's ancestors (and Bill's 10th great grandparents).
On the 1865 New York State census for Ischua, Grace is shown living with Electa, a widow with one child, in Anthony's household as his granddaughter. The presumption, then, is that Calvin married Electa and died soon after, perhaps even before Grace was born since I've had no luck finding a death record other than the cemetery entry for the Caswell Cemetery showing his date of death as 1863 and his age 21yr 2mo 24da. Electa then lived with Calvin's father, Anthony (see 1865 Census record) and married Calvin's brother Charles in 1868. Therefore, Grace was Charles' niece and stepdaughter. I also have Sally's will confirming Grace as her granddaughter. |
Marriage* | 18 June 1881; Cuba, Allegany, New York; Principal=Arthur Hamilton Wheeler3 |
Death* | 1893 |
Burial* | 1893; Abbotts Cemetery, Abbotts, Cattaraugus, New York |
