Thomas Southworth
#3983, born 1579, died between 1615 and 1622
Life Events
|
Birth* | 15792 |
Death* | between 1615 and 1622; England 3 |
Note | Thomas was "of Samlesbury, gent.; mat. at Oriel Coll., Oxford, 19 Oct 1599, ae. 20 yrs.; A.B., 22 Oct 1602; adm. Gray's Inn, London, 1614; living 1582, when mentioned in the will of his grandfather, Sir William Lister, and 1595, when mentioned in the will of his grandfather, Sir John Southworth of Samlesbury; d. bef. 1622 (not then listed as a Foreign Burgess of Preston, tho' he was listed in 1602. He d. after 11 Nov. 1614, when he was adm. to Gray's Inn"2 |
Note* | It appears that this Thomas (brother of Edward b. 1591 who married Alice Carpenter) remained in Leyden and had at least two children, Thomas b. 1616 and William b. after 1616 in Leyden. Thomas and William both immigrated (single) to America with the Dutch version of Southworth (Southard) as surname. Thomas was married in New Amsterdam in 1650 and William was married in 1688 in Virginia. The rationale for this assumption is that "Thomas and Edward (the brothers) are the only two male Southworths that we can find associated with the Pilgrim Separatists group." Also, a review of all the records of the city of Leyden shows "only two Separatists with the Southworth surname -- Edward and Thomas."4 |
