(Witness) History | Palatine Marker, Route 9W, Saugerties, NY Know O Traveler, within sight of this hill on October 6, 1710, led by the Rev. Joshua Kocherthal and the Rev. Johann Frederick Hager, there arrived on the east and west shores of Hudson's River nearly three hundred families of refugees of the Palatine region in Europe, who suffered many sorrows in the ravages of war, sickness, poverty, and destitution, yet survived to settle these shores, sustained by their faith in the Lord and the sympathy of Queen Anne of England, whom they came to serve in the reduction of the pine forest for naval stores for Her Majesty's fleet. Milit-Beg* | 1711; Served as a volunteer for the expedition against Canada in 1711.7 |
Note* | Note that the book, Koon and Coons Families of Eastern New York by William Solyman Coons, Tuttle Publishing Company, VT 1937, contains errors that were later corrected by Henry Z. Jones, Jr., in his work, The Palatine Families of New York.8 |
DNA HG* | R-M269 (R1b1b2a1b4c). Probable Y-DNA haplogroup is based on DNA testing at FTDNA of descendants of the two sons of JJK. |
DNA test* | 2009; Y-DNA tests of two descendants of son Henrich now prove that the haplogroup for this line is R1b1b2a1b4c, considered to be the Alpine Celt motif, or signature. Autosomal DNA matching of numerous descendants further confirms the relatedness of both sons of JJK.9,10 |
Euro-Origin* | 6661 Rieschweiler, Pfalz, Germany, 49.692508N8.058472E; Per Jones: "There was a Johann Jacob Kuhn aus der Schweitz von Balcken Zurcher Gebieth who, as he was called a cowherd, a swineherd, and a daylabourer, was found in several Chbks. in the Pfalz. This Johann Jacob Kuhn and wife Maria Elisabetha had ch. bpt. at several villages where other 1709ers were found: 1) Johann Wilhelm, bpt. 27 Nov 1695 at 6661 Rieschweiler; 2) Johann Jacob, bpt. 12 July 1697 a 6661 Rieschweiler; 3) Hans Simon, bpt. 1 April 1703 at 6653 Webenheim; and 4) Anna Gertraud, bpt. Jan 1706 at Walsheim a/Blies..." Note: Hans Jacob Kun, his wife, and 5 ch. were in the 6th party of Palatines in Holland in 1709 (Rotterdam Lists). Since the fifth child is not accounted for above, see the other finding below: Per Jones: "6349 Driedorf perhaps had as many 1709er emigrants as any village in Germany. In the registers of this village (9km. s.w. of Herborn; Chbks. begin 1671), "A son" (Joh. Henrich? - HJ) was bpt. 10 Jan 1706 to Johann Jacob Kuntz, rider in Driesdorf, and his wife Anna - sp.: Joh. Henrich Reis ..., Philipp Schroder here, Anna Maria - w/o Hans Henrich Petri here, and Ann Ursell - d/o Henrich Bezen here. "More proof still is needed to firm up this connective (HJ)." Notice that I have found several persons with the name Hans, Johann, Jacob Kuhn in Zurich who would clearly fit as a relative, but this is not yet confirmed, of course.3,11 |
