Note* | Edmond was the ancestor of our distant cousin, Am. Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. Gen. Sherman was also the grandson of Taylor Sherman and Elizabeth Stoddard. Elizabeth was not a descendant of John Stoddard and Mary Foote; as we are (see Stoddards in this record). Gen. Sherman_s line of descent is as follows: Thomas, Henry, Henry, Edmond, Samuel, Deacon John, John, Daniel, Taylor, Charles, Wm. Tecumseh. It should also be noted that Gen. Sherman' s younger brother, The Hon. John Sherman (1833-1900) was a reknowned statesman. He served in both the House of Reps. and the Senate. After serving in the House, he was elected to the Senate in 1861 and served there until 1897. He was Sec. of the Treasury from 1877 to 1881 under Pres. Hayes and Sec. of State under Pres. McKinley. |

Note* | There is conflict in the records at my disposal. The two genealogies I have been working with differ as to which Emond married Judith Angier. Rev. David Sherman says she married in 1611. He further states that she and her husband Edmond (s/o Henry) came to America about 1632 and settled in Watertown, Mass. Afterward moving to Wethersfield, Conn. and finally New Haven, Conn.
The problem with this is their children were born between 1599 and 1618. Either Edmond had a prior marriage or the marriage date of 1611 is probably incorrect.
Rev. Henry Sherman has solved the problem by marrying Judith to Edmond (s/o Edmond) born June 23, 1595. Again there is a problem. This Edmond would have been only 16 years old, in 1611. He also had a 1st wife, Joan, with whom he reportedly had at least 3 children. In short this latter record seems fatally flawed. |

Note* | Records of the late genealogist, Rev. Henry B. Sherman, of Esopus, NY, are thought by some to be a more accurate work than the previous work of the late Rev. David Sherman of Wilbraham, Mass. This however is debatable. He suggests that John of Dedham, son of Edmond Sherman and Anne Cleare were the parents of Capt. John Sherman. That particular son John is shown, by order of placement, in both records to have been the last child of this couple, although neither gives a date of birth for him. If this were correct, he would have been too young to have a child much before 1620. Capt. John was born by 1614 (Poss. 1604).
Having looked at both records, I find the work of Rev. David Sherman to be the more scholarly. Rev. Henry Sherman's record is at times "confused" and while it purports to "correct" the former record I find it lacking any evidence to support his alternate theories. In defense of Henry, the record I have is an anonymous third party effort, published about 1890, using his compilations.
Some records report that John married Grace Makin. One marriage date given is May 14, 1610. Grace was born 1589, according to that report. If this is so, that would be too late to make her the mother of Capt. John Sherman, if born 1604 as stated by Rev. David Sherman. It would seem that Capt. John was born between 1604 - 1614. Rev. Henry Sherman says he died 1690 at age 76, while Rev. David Sherman says he died Jan. 25, 1691, making his age about 87. |
