Cerdic (King of Wessex)
#4690, born about 470, died 534
Life Events
|
Birth* | about 470 |
Death* | 534 |
Note* | "'495. This year, came two leaders into Britain, Cerdic and Cynric, his son, with five ships, at a place that is called Cerdics' Ore and they fought with the Welsh the same day.' Thus briefly does the old Saxon Chronicle record one of the most important events in the history of the English nation. Twenty-four years later, after defeating Arthur and obliging him to yield Hants and Somerset, Cerdic caused himself to be crowned king of Wessex, at Winchester.
"This invasion of Britain established on the throne of Wessex a ruler who was destined to be the forefather of nearly all the sovereigns of England. 'Every prince who has ruled England before and sixe the eleventh century has had the blood of Cerdic, the West Saxon, in his veins.' Cerdic died in 534 and was succeeded by his son." 1 |
