Note*"Though a Friend, Oliver Hull, the son of John and Damaris (Cary) Hull, took an active, if quiet, part in the Revolution. He married Penelope Ffones (Fones), whose great-grandfather had been one of the most important men of the Colony, and with her he moved to New York a few years before the war. She has been especially honored because of her great kindness to the prisoners during the Revolution. The late Robert Hull, in his pamphlet of the Hull family, gives a very interesting account of the efforts the Quakers made to mitigate the suffering of the American prisoners during the time the British had possession of New York. 'Among the most active of these was Oliver Hull, Robert Murray and his son John. The Long Island Quakers furnished the beef, vegetables, etc., and in the garden of Oliver Hull's house, corner of Beekman and William Streets, these were put into a huge caldron and under Mrs. Hull's directions speedily converted into soup, was soon brought to the famishing prisoners. One day Mrs. Hull, with her daughter Penelope, was passing the old Sugar House in Liberty Street when a prisoner called out from a grated window, 'I hope you won't be discouraged, dear ladies; the rebels are not discouraged; they'll never give up.' When the British took possession of the town, several people were billeted at Oliver Hull's house, one a young officer, Count Saint Leger, of whom they became exceedingly fond, who presented Mr. Hull at parting with a tall staff made of some curious wood and mounted in gold, as a souvenir of his gratitude and friendship. . . .' The son of Oliver and Penelope (Fones) Hull was John Hull III. 314. OLIVER HULL, 1732-1803, of New York City, son of (95) Capt. John and Damaris Cary Hull, was married first May 19, 1751 to Penelope Fones (d.1795), daughter of Joseph Fones and his wife Penelope of Jamestown, R. I. His second wife was Hannah Field, whom he married at Purchase, N. Y., November 16, 1796. Oliver Hull was born and married at Jamestown, but before 1770 became a resident of New York City, and was there engaged with his brother Joseph in commercial pursuits. Oliver Hull was an Elder in the Society of Friends. The 'Book of the Hulls' by his grandson, the late Oliver Hull of New York City, gives some account of his religious life, his trials during the Revolution, and the philanthropic efforts put forth by him and his brother for the relief of the patriots then held as prisoners in the Provost and the Middle Dutch and Sugar House prisons. After the war he and his son John Hull were engaged in business as Importers and Wholesale Druggists under the firm name of Oliver Hull and Son. It is a matter of record that Thomas Fones, apothecary at the Three Fawns, Old Bailey, London, married Anna Winthrop, the sister of John Winthrop, Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. They had a son Samuel, who was the father of John Fones, gentleman, who came to New England and settled at Kingston in 1669, was Clerk of his Majesty's Commission, Recorder of Narragansett Province, a Captain in the forces, and his Majesty's Justice of the Peace in 1683.
This John Fones, gentleman, had a son Jeremiah, who was the father of Joseph Fones, whose daughter Penelope became the wife of Oliver Hull and the mother of his six CHILDREN 628. Abigail Hull, b. Principally and first of all I recommend my Soul to God who gave it, and my body to the earth tobe decently buried at the discretion of my Executrix hereinafter named. And as touching such temporal and worldly estates as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life--I give and dispose of in the manner and form following: Imprimus--That all such just and lawful debts which I owe to any person, together with my funeral charges, to be answered and paid by my Executrix hereinafter named, within convenient time after my decease. Item--I give to my son Oliver Hull all that my farm which is in part of Holly swamp farm which lieth between land that was formerly my brotherTiddeman Hull's, and land belonging to my brother Joseph Hull, to him and to his heirs and assigns forever. Note*"JOHN HULL II lived at Canonicut and married Damaris, the daughter of John and Damaris (Arnold) Cary. He held various offices, among others that of Representative, in 1757. Their son was Oliver Hull. 95. CAPT. JOHN HULL, 1694-1765, mariner and farmer, of Connonicut Island (now Jamestown), R. I., son of (29) Capt. John and Alice Tiddeman Hull, was married Apr. 3, 1726, to Demaris Cary, daughter of John Cary and his wife Damaris Arnold of Bridgewater, Mass. He was a Captain in the merchant service. Warrants were offered to him and to his brothers to positions of prominence in the Royal Navy. These were declined, father and son preferring to remain consistent friends and pursue their avocations with the pacific principles they professed. Capt. Hull was made a freeman May 3, 1720, and became a prosperous business man and farmer as well as a successful mariner. In 1751 he was a deputy to the Grand Assembly and for many years enjoyed exclusive berry [ferry?] privileges between Newport and Jamestown. As he advanced in years he kept adding to the acres inherited from his father and died possessed of a large estate. Capt. Hull and Damaris Cary were married 'out of meeting,' her family being Congregationalists. The ceremony was performed by Capt. Hull's brother, Dr. Tiddeman Hull, then Chief Magistrate and Warden of the Island. John Cary, the father of Mrs. Hull, was the son of John Cary and his wife Abigail Allen of Bridgewater and the grandson of John Carey, or Carew, and his wife Elisabeth Godfrey, who came from Somersetshire, England, to Bridgewater, R. I., in 1634. The first John Carew was born near Bristol, England, about 1605; was liberally educated in France; for many years was the town clerk of Bridgewater, and was one of the first instructors in Latin to teach in the schools of America. Damaris Arnold, the wife of John Cary and mother of Demaris Cary Hull, was the daughter of Oliver Arnold and his wife Phebe Cook of Jamestown. Oliver Arnold was the son of Governor Benedict Arnold and his wife Damaris Wescott of Providence. Governor Benedict Arnold was an assistant for several years before he became governor, and was reputed to be the richest man in the colony. William Arnold, father of Governor Arnold, came from England to Hingham, New England, in 1635, and was one of the twelve associates of Roger Williams in the founding of Providence Plantation in 1636. Abigail Allyn Cary, the grandmother of Damaris Cary Hull, was the daughter of Samuel Allyn of Braintree, Mass., and he was the son of George Allyn, Sr., who sailed with Rev. Joseph Hull from Weymouth, Mar.20, 1635. Elizabeth Godfrey Hull, the great grandmother of Damaris Cary Hull, was the only child of Francis Godfrey and his wife Elizabeth, who settled in Duxbury before 1638, and soon removed to Bridgewater. Damaris Wescott, the great grandmother of Damaris Cary Hull, was the daughter of Stukeley Wescott who settled at Salem in 1636, joined the Baptists, and was excommunicated with Roger Williams, who names him as his first grantee in his deed to his twelve associates. "CAPTAIN JOHN HULL, fourth child and second son of Tristram and Blanche Hull, was born in Barnstable, March, 1654. He held various public offices at Jamestown, R. I., and was Assessor, Town Clerk, for seven years, in the Town Council, and Deputy, 1698, 1703, 1706, 1707, 1709. He was also on the important committee to hire out ferries, belonging to the Colonies. Admiral Sir Charles Wager was his apprentice when a boy, and a sincere friendship always existed between them. He brought over from London an English wife, having been married there October 23, 1684, to Alice, the daughter of Captain Edmund Teddeman, of St. Magdalens, London. Their marriage certificate is in the possession of the family, and is a most interesting document, bearing the names of a great number of those who witnessed the ceremony. Their son: JOHN HULL II., lived at Canonicut, and married Damaris, the daughter of John and Damaris (Arnold) Cary. He held various offices, among others that of Representative, in 1757. Their son was Oliver Hull. 29. CAPT. JOHN HULL, 1654-1733, of London, England, and Newport andConnonicut, R. I., son of (4) Capt. Tristram Hull and his wife Blanche,was married Oct. 23, 1684 at Horseleydown meeting of Friends, in Southwalk, London, to Alice Tiddeman, 1659-1734, daughter of Capt. EdmundTiddeman, who was a resident of the Parish of Mary St. Magdelen's, Burmundy, Southwickshire, and a member of the Horseleydown meeting. Capt. John Hull from early life followed the sea, and for many years sailed his father's and his own ships between Newport and London, and acquired lasting fame as a navigator in both England and America. He was the master, instructor, and friend of one of the most successful naval commanders in English history--the well-known 'Quaker Admiral,' the Right Hon. Sir Charles Wager, Admiral of the White, First Lord of the Admiralty and Privy Councillor. Capt. Edmund Tiddeman's name appears in a list of 'sufferers and gallant standard bearers' given in Besse's great book. In July, 1670, the Horseleydown Friends' meeting house was demolished by order of the King in council, and Sir Christopher Wren, England's greatest church architect, superintended the destruction of the humble place of worship.Thereafter private or 'silent' meetings for worship were held in the house of Capt. Tiddeman until their meeting house was rebuilt as it now stands. In 1672 Capt. Tiddeman traveled in company with William Penn on a religious visit through Kent County. He was in prison in 1683, but was released before the marriage of his daughter Alice to Capt. John Hull, in 1684, at which date 1460 Friends were lying in the common jails of the counties of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. At about this period Capt. Tiddeman purchased a tract of more than 700 acres of land in Burlington Co., N. J., no doubt with a view of emigrating and settling there, but he never came to this country, and the land in question passed through his daughter Alice to her son, Joseph Hull. Capt. John and Alice Tiddeman Hull remained in London for about two years after their marriage. Then they removed to Newport, R. I., bringing with them a certificate from the monthly meeting at Horseleydown, dated 27 thof 2nd month 1687, certifying that while resident there 'they behaved themselves in their lives and conversations as becometh friends of the Blessed Truth.' They had been in Newport but a short time when Capt. Hull purchased a plantation of 370 acres on the north end of Connonicut Island, in Narragansett Bay, and there built a mansion which eventually became their permanent home. This mansion was burned by the British in the winter of 1775-6, but was rebuilt and is still occupied by his descendants, and is known as the Old Hull Place. Capt. Hull was admitted a freeman of the colony May 6, 1690, and was deputy to the General Assembly of Rhode Island in 1698, 1706, 1707 and1709, representing Connonicut (Jamestown). He held the local offices of councilman and assessor; was town clerk in 1695 and again in 1704, and became head warden of Jamestown in 1712. He died at Connonicut, and by his will dated Jan. 19, 1732, a large property was distributed among his heirs. Farms were given to each of his three sons; an ample life interest was secured to his wife, and a large residuary estate in lands and personalty was divided in equal shares among all his children and the heirs of deceased children. Alice Tiddeman Hull survived her husband but a short time. She died Oct.24, 1734. In her will she disposed of her property by equal division among her children. She was reputed to be 'a lady of great dignity and amiability of character.
