Story*-Mamie’s Courage

When she was born in December of 1875 in Long Island, New York, she was the first of her family to be born in America. Surrounded by her loving parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, she was soon whisked off on a long, arduous journey. They would travel together to Chicago, then rest briefly to prepare for the still rugged wagon trail to Oregon. Once there, the grownups quickly set to work in the busy frontier town od Portland. Her grandpa was a painter, grandma a midwife, father a barber, and mother a housewife. The family grew quickly although mother never had another child and died when Mamie was only 15 and an only child.

Her life changed dramatically then as her father scooped her up and took her back to the East Coast, this time to New Jersey. All alone with him, she must have been very lonely but was soon fortunate to meet the man I always knew as Grandpa. They were married and soon settled into his large family. But she didn’t get pregnant. Years went by and still there were no children to complete their life together. Then one day her father died and she took a very bold step. After ten years of a barren marriage, she decided to have an affair so that she could close the gap in their lives. We’ll never know if Grandpa knew, but there was never a question whether this child would be welcome. He was joyfully received by everyone, and I’m sure in that Victorian era no one said a word. I’m very proud to have known this secretive but warm and loving grandmother.

It was DNA that revealed her secret. I can only surmise that a virulent form of Mumps attacked her husband and his brothers, none of whom had children of their own except for the youngest.
